Why Galax? Before you explore our services, we first want to give you a little insight into why we chose our name, and the very significant history behind the Galax plant.

Galax is a small, shiny, heart-shaped evergreen leaf that grows low on the shady forest floors of the Southern Appalachians. In winter, it turns a deep maroon-red, then flips back to green in spring! In the 1890s, city folks up north fell in love with that winter red-bronze color. Galax became a Christmas decorating trend often adorning or completely being the highlight in wreaths, garlands, and other floral arrangements. Since before 1900, families in rural Appalachian communities started picking galax leaves and selling them to florists. It became a real, reliable way to make extra money. This was fundamental to their survival especially during the cold bitter winter months, when other work was scarce. Pickers traditionally earned 1 to 5 cents per leaf, and a good picker could gather thousands in a day. The leaves are sturdy, good-looking, and last a long time on the shelf. They could even be stored for weeks or months before use, which made them super practical for florists. Unfortunately, poaching became a thing so the Forest Service now requires permits and limits the harvest season and leaf size, trying to protect the plant while keeping the tradition alive
